Friday's Library Career Fair provided an ideal networking opportunity for librarians, students, employers and recruiters. Planned by students of the Library and Information Science Student Union, under the direction of Diane Nahl (SL: Adra Letov), LIS Instructor with the University of Hawaii, and Daisyblue Hefferman, students learned valuable skills for the workforce and had the opportunity to showcase their talents. Preceding the speakers' portion was an orientation expertly delivered by Letov, who taught new avatars in Second Life everything they would need to know, not only to attend and enjoy the day's events, but to have continued success in world. Otherwise, the career fair was divided into three sections. A panel on the intersection of Second Life libraries and real life libraries started the day's events, followed closely by keynote speaker Kitty Pope (SL: Kitty Phillips), Executive Director of Alliance Virtual Library. The second section allowed students in Second Life to share research presentations, and the third section was a useful panel outlining what libraries are looking for in today's job market.
The Library Fair on Saturday, May 9 – a professional networking event – allowed librarians from Second Life to meet and share information. Lori Bell (SL: Lorelei Junot), Director of Innovation with Alliance Library System, presented the keynote on May 9, entitled, “Librarians and Innovation in Second Life”. Junot reminded the audience what librarianship in Second Life was like three years ago when few people had experience in virtual worlds, and librarians in Second Life were involved part-time at best. Today, not only are full-time jobs in librarianship in Second Life available, but requirements and qualifications are high, as the positions not only demand excellence in the field of librarianship, but also experience in virtual worlds. Many fields in librarianship were represented at Friday's Career Fair. JJ Jacobson (SL: JJ Drinkwater) spoke on digital publics, anytime reference, and the conversation of culture. Debbie Duncan (SL: Honoraria Paine) shared her experiences as a medical librarian in Second Life. Barbara Galick (SL: Puglet Dancer), an academic librarian at Bradley University, explained what libraries are looking for in today's job market. Dancer banished the fear of interviewing for the students in the audience, urging them to be themselves and encouraging them to bring their senses of humor to the interview.
“Being a LGBT (lesbian, gay, bi, transgender, or transexual) Librarian in Today's Libraries”, an eloquent speech delivered by Samantha Hypatia Thompson (SL: Hypatia Dejavu), informed those attending the Library Career fair about all the “ins and outs” of safely becoming a LGBT librarian. Dejavu's vivid portrayal stirred the audience like few other speakers. Many were outraged at the present treatment LGBT librarians currently endure. Dejavu surely won many more supporters to the LGBT cause at the conclusion of her stirring personal account. The Library Career Fair's activities were concluded by a social networking party mixer for both Career Fair and Library Fair participants and friends with DJ Gwen Carillon. The Career Fair was followed the next day by the Alliance Virtual Library Library Fair. Micki McIntyre (SL: Derry McMahon) instructed attendees on growing a community library in Second Life through her experiences as creator of the West of Ireland Library and Cultural Center, known as the WOI. McIntyre said, “The WOI was created as a branch of the South Texas Celtic Music Association to spread awareness of and spread the organization's charitable efforts in support of Project Children. Project Children is a grassroots charity that reaches out to children in Northern Ireland, helping to breakdown cultural and interpersonal barriers between ethnic and religious groups that have existed in many cases for centuries.”
The final speaker of the Library Fair was P. Charles Livermore (SL: Hopalong Oh), a librarian at St. John's University, who spoke about his experiences in Second Life and the basics of building. A self-proclaimed beginner “who bumped into walls like any other newbie in Second Life,” Oh shared tricks and tips to encourage others to start contributing in any way they can. This informative dialog lent confidence to those who perhaps had logged into Second Life for the first time that weekend. This collaborative two day event between the LIS Student Union and the Alliance Virtual Library far exceeded the expectations of those who organized it and those who attended. It was a celebratory tribute worthy of the Alliance Virtual Library's third anniversary, having furthered the professionalism, dedication and creativity of librarianship. |
SL Libraries 4 Newbies![]() Text and Photos by RENEEILENE SPIRITWEAVER This was the winning entry in the Library category for our November article writing contest Isaac Asimov on the Barnes Space Station display Rachelville created by the author. Pictured here is the author, Rocky Vallejo, and Franja Russell. Once upon a time, in a library far, far away…..alright, the library wasn’t so far away. In fact, it was only as far away as the keyboard of your computer. The library is online. Ok, not so much online, as in Second Life. Many people know what Second Life is, but what are libraries and librarians doing in Second Life? Everything! Librarians are attending presentations and meetings, book discussions, live readings, concerts and parties. Libraries are holding meetings, events, conducting training, creating simulations, recruiting, marketing and serving the public as always in this brave new world. You’re new to Second Life and getting a little tired of walking around with a plain, ... Libraries | Sunday, 1 November 2009 Read more |
Public Library Group is Reborn![]() Text and Photo by BOOKIE BALOGH Leeorie Alter After a period of inactivity, the Public Library group has come to life once more, under the able care and ownership of Leeorie Alter. With two meetings in rapid succession – in September and October – the group is focusing on ways to bring public library interests in Second Life together, and to provide support and networking for public librarians with a possible interest in SL but without sufficient resources to establish a full presence for their libraries in SL. Initially established to undertake several projects, including a prototype library, the group will now continue to stimulate interest in SL on the part of public libraries and library systems, and to offer assistance in providing a presence inworld. Alter says, “there are very few SL projects originating from real life libraries; that is one of the issues I would like to see the group ... Public Libraries | Sunday, 1 November 2009 Read more |
Johnson & Wales Opens its SL Library![]() Text and Photos by BOOKIE BALOGH A new resident of Cybrary City II is the Johnson & Wales Library, headed by Barbarathelibrarian Magic, who took over the building from Abbey Zenith and made modifications to further accommodate the educational needs of JW University. Johnson & Wales' dean, Rosita Hopper, is very supportive of the use of technology within the educational program, and has been a stimulating force behind the creation of the JW Library in SL focusing on culinary resources. The building itself is magical - transparent and open, with wonderful landscaping. The catalog brings together the resources of all four Johnson & Wales campus libraries, and the library provides information literacy support for the university's students. The first floor is devoted to culinary arts; the second to education and hospitality; and the third is a culinary herb garden ... Academic Libraries | Wednesday, 2 September 2009 Read more |
