After a few false starts, the rebuilding of Eye4You Island is finally underway. For those of you who are not familiar with Eye4You, it is an island that is owned by the Public Library of Charlotte and Mecklenburg County, under the management of Saryn Eye4You or Fanwood (aka Bluewings Hayek on the Main Grid and Kelly Czarnecki in the real world). The island is also benefitting from the return of three of its former teen denizens as adult estate managers, Daniel Voyager, Nicholas Hawthorne, and Alexander Carver. In keeping with the island’s tradition of giving teens the opportunity to design creative environments within Teen Second Life, this project has been designed and is in the process of being built exclusively by teens.
Working from a plan created by teen avatar Ruud Carpool, he and a group of teen builders including Tomires Ping, Jonny Cardiff, Sith Thunder, and others, are creating some exciting new spaces for future events and educational programs. The plan also includes a subterranean subway system that will allow visitors to travel from the central hub to all the different sections of the island. These sections will include a park and events arena as well as an area for NASA exhibits and resources. One ambitious project in the works is a simulation of NASA’s Neutral Buoyancy Lab where astronauts train in no-gravity conditions before their real missions. One of the first events planned there is a simulation of the training that the Hubble repair crew went through to prepare them for the real thing. After this event, the teens plan to simulate the actual repair in deep space above Eye4You Island. This project is overseen by Arc Indigo (aka Caledonia Heron on the Main Grid and Stephanie Smith in the real world), who is involved with NASA eEducation Island, NASA Learning Technologies and NASA CoLab Island on the Main Grid, as well as Science Friday events in Teen Second Life.
The island is also host to a highly successful yearly college fair, run by Libby Beam (Ann Burgess in SL, Beth Kraemer in RL). To keep yourself informed about the exciting new things planned for the island, check out the Eye4You blog or join the public wiki. For more pictures, here is a link to the Eye4You Flickrstream. Teen meetings are held every Sunday at 11 AM SLT.
